Abstract:

The paper discusses three points of A New Study on the Word Zhuo() of the Phrase Yimusanzhuofa(一沐三捉发)(《再谈一沐三捉发)by Liu Zhao and Zhang Chuanguan. First, in ancient and Medieval Chinese(from pre Qin period to the Six Dynasties), zhuo() had two separate meanings of hold and knead, squeeze, which could not be viewed as the same terms. Second, there is limitation in contextual interpretation, and a word could not be explained beyond its least semantic potential;as for the condition of zhuo fa(捉发), the possible meaning conveyed by context should not be added into the sense of the term zhuo(捉),since the word itself does not express the meaning of wring something to dry. Third, meeting guests with loosen hair holding in hands was not always impolite, especially in particular urgent situations.

Key words:

zhuo fa(捉发)    semantics    contextual interpretation    ancient ritual
