As a result of the long history, the original tablet inscription has often been damaged as the surface has been weathered to cleave or peel off, so that the damaged and incomplete characters could not be recognized accurately. There have been many mistakes such as lacking characters and misinterpretation in the compilation of inscriptions. The problem of damaged characters is a huge obstacle and has seriously affected the accurate interpretation of the inscription. This paper systematically summarizes
experiences and lessons of dealing with damaged characters, and concludes eight methods of examination and identification for it. Assisted with case analysis, this paper aims to provide references for the interpretation, reading and identification of excavated documents such as inscription, and research on Modern Chinese Characters.
