Abstract: The traditional interpretation of Chinese character represented by “Shuowen Jiezi”, after its over one thousand boom years, gradually diminished with the emergence of new materials, the input of new theories, the division in the disciplines of Chinese characters, and the failure in establishment of the discipline of Chinese character interpretation due to insuffi cient social needs and etc. With the development of society, there have been major changes in the social needs, academic conditions, and research teams of Chinese character interpretation. It’s the need for inheritance of excellent traditions, the exploration of new paradigms of Chinese character interpretation and the gradual disciplinary development that make it possible to establish Chinese character hermeneutics. The article analyzes the reasons for the decline of Chinese character interpretation and the possibility of its revival, discusses the theory and content of Chinese character interpretation, establishes the research principles, and looks forward to the future of Chinese character interpretation. Chinese character interpretation aims for a comprehensive description and full explanation of the structure, evolution, relationship, culture and various functions of Chinese characters using multi-disciplinary knowledge such as paleography, theoretical philology, linguistics, philology, history, and archaeology, which is of the basic theoretical research of multidisciplinary intersection. This article is a theoretical overview of the practice of Chinese character interpretation.
