Abstract: Zu Ting Shi Yuan is a book written by Shanqing in the Northern Song Dynasty, which studies the
quotations of Zen Buddhism. The book is accurate in its interpretation, with explanation of what was
not explained by the predecessors. However, its explanation of some diffi cult words needs to be further
examined. This article lists three words of that kind: te shi ( 特石 ), not referring to a big stone, should
rather be regarded as a hard stone; han qing ( 韩情 ) and han lu ( 韩卢 ) have the same meanings as a
black dog, while han qing (韩情) is the guise of han qing (韩青), and han qing (韩青) and han lu (韩卢)
refer to the same breed of dogs; quan luan ( 棬挛 / 圈挛 ) means round and snare. From the perspective
of etymology, quan luan ( 棬 挛 / 圈 挛 ) should be a word with overlapping vowels formed after the
syllable of quan ( 圈 ) becomes longer.
