Abstract
With the function of governing meanings, core meaning is used to explain the restrictive mechanism of the evolution of word meanings and the deep connection between the internal meanings of words. By taking zhouxuan ( 周 旋 ), shuyan ( 舒 颜 ) and xiangde ( 相 得 ), etc.,as examples, this paper expounds the value of core meaning in the study of polysyllabic words from three aspects,i.e., identifying the borrowed meaning, interpreting the word meaning accurately and revealing therelationships between different meanings of word. The semantic study of polysyllabic words has practical value for dictionary interpretation and lexicographical work, while the core meaning plays a pivotal role in the semantic study of polysyllabic words.
