The Grammaticalization and Subjectivization of shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )

Abstract  In modern Chinese, shen zhi ( 甚至 ), shen er ( 甚而 )and shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )are a group
of synonyms. Shen zhi (甚至)is often used in dictionaries to defi ne shen er (甚而)or shen er zhi yu (甚
而至于 ). By a careful analysis of the sentences in which shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )is located, we fi nd
that shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )has a deeper degree of reinforcement, which is obviously diff erent from
shen zhi ( 甚至 )and shen er ( 甚而 ). The article, from the grammaticalization and subjectivization of
shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 ), by discussing its origin and evolution, seeks diachronic explanations and
proofs for the synchronic diff erence between shen er z hi yu ( 甚而至于 ), shen zhi ( 甚至 )and shen er
( 甚而 ).
