Abstract This paper, taking the normative concept of Ganlu Zishu (《干禄字书》) and the defi nition and
variant forms of Chinese characters in Modern Chinese Dictionary (《现代汉语词典》) as examples, by
analyzing the normative problems of ancient and modern Chinese dictionaries, points out that although
dictionaries are an important part of language norms, their normative functions have not been fully
explored.
