Inheritance and Innovation of Chinese Character Interpretation
LI Shoukui
THE STUDY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS AND LANGUAGE    2022, 19 (3): 3-.
Abstract   PDF (1535KB)
The traditional interpretation of Chinese character represented by “Shuowen Jiezi”, after its
over one thousand boom years, gradually diminished with the emergence of new materials, the input
of new theories, the division in the disciplines of Chinese characters, and the failure in establishment
of the discipline of Chinese character interpretation due to insuffi cient social needs and etc. With the
development of society, there have been major changes in the social needs, academic conditions, and
research teams of Chinese character interpretation. It’s the need for inheritance of excellent traditions,
the exploration of new paradigms of Chinese character interpretation and the gradual disciplinary
development that make it possible to establish Chinese character hermeneutics. The article analyzes the
reasons for the decline of Chinese character interpretation and the possibility of its revival, discusses
the theory and content of Chinese character interpretation, establishes the research principles, and
looks forward to the future of Chinese character interpretation. Chinese character interpretation aims
for a comprehensive description and full explanation of the structure, evolution, relationship, culture
and various functions of Chinese characters using multi-disciplinary knowledge such as paleography,
theoretical philology, linguistics, philology, history, and archaeology, which is of the basic theoretical
research of multidisciplinary intersection. This article is a theoretical overview of the practice of Chinese
character interpretation.

Examples of Typographical Errors in Jinpingmei Cihua (《金瓶梅词话》)
YANG Lin
THE STUDY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS AND LANGUAGE    2022, 19 (3): 31-.
Abstract   PDF (1657KB)
There are many errors and mistakes in Jin Ping Mei Ci Hua (《金瓶梅词话》). Although former
scholars have made a lot of revision, it is far from overcoming the obstacles of words and expressions.
There are two main reasons for difficulties in calibration. First, the examiners, who lacked correct
understanding of the rough printing process of Cihua, considered the problem mostly in the seemingly
standard regular script, which can not truly deal with the complexity of the text of Cihua. Second, Cihua
is written in spoken dialect. The examiners lack preparation for knowledge in dialect and colloquialism.
The traditional mode of thinking must be changed in the proofreading and interpretation of Cihua.
If we only focus on the regular script, it is often diffi cult to fi nd the truth. This article categorizes the
typographical errors in Jinpingmei Cihua (《金瓶梅词话》) into three types: (1) the typographical errors
of misrecognition of the cursive script, (2) the typographical errors of misrecognition of the variant
characters, (3) the typographical errors of error separation of the font parts. Since all ancient books go
through the handwriting stage, the three types of errors can also be used for reference in the proofreading
and interpretation of other ancient books.

Methods of Recognizing Diffi cult Characters in Cantonese#br# from the Perspective of Chinese history——Taking the Diffi cult Characters of Cantonese#br# Opera in the Qing Dynasty as an Example#br#
LI JiaYi, ZENG ZhaoCong
THE STUDY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS AND LANGUAGE    2022, 19 (3): 45-.
Abstract   PDF (1666KB)
This paper attempts to combine the knowledge of Chinese history and dialectology, link the
common interpretation principles with the individual characteristics of Cantonese, and examine the
diffi cult characters in Cantonese opera in the Qing Dynasty from the perspective of “shape, sound and
meaning”. When the reader is faced with an unfamiliar dialectal word, he can try the following methods
to interpret it: when using glyphs, consider synchronic glyph materials and transforming parts; when
using dialects, make a connection to the bottom layer of phonetics and foreign languages, and get rid of
the problems of phony borrowing and conjugation; when using the meaning of words, pay attention to
their distinction.

THE STUDY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS AND LANGUAGE    2022, 19 (3): 95-.
Abstract   PDF (1465KB)

variant forms of Chinese characters in Modern Chinese Dictionary (《现代汉语词典》) as examples, by
analyzing the normative problems of ancient and modern Chinese dictionaries, points out that although
dictionaries are an important part of language norms, their normative functions have not been fully
explored.

The Grammaticalization and Subjectivization of shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )
LI Rongrong
THE STUDY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS AND LANGUAGE    2022, 19 (3): 113-.
Abstract   PDF (1586KB)
In modern Chinese, shen zhi ( 甚至 ), shen er ( 甚而 )and shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )are a group
of synonyms. Shen zhi (甚至)is often used in dictionaries to defi ne shen er (甚而)or shen er zhi yu (甚
而至于 ). By a careful analysis of the sentences in which shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )is located, we fi nd
that shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 )has a deeper degree of reinforcement, which is obviously diff erent from
shen zhi ( 甚至 )and shen er ( 甚而 ). The article, from the grammaticalization and subjectivization of
shen er zhi yu ( 甚而至于 ), by discussing its origin and evolution, seeks diachronic explanations and
proofs for the synchronic diff erence between shen er z hi yu ( 甚而至于 ), shen zhi ( 甚至 )and shen er
( 甚而 ).
